A common surface treatment, anodizing is a protective oxide layer that naturally forms on aluminum surfaces when exposed to air. During manual machining, aluminum parts are suspended from conductive supports and immersed in an electrolytic solution in which direct current is introduced. As the acidity of the solution dissolves the naturally formed oxide layer, the electrical current releases oxygen on its surface, creating a new protective layer of aluminum oxide.
By balancing the dissolution rate and accumulation rate, the oxide layer forms nanopores, allowing the coating to continue to grow beyond what is naturally possible. Later, for aesthetics, the nanopores are sometimes filled with other corrosion inhibitors or colored dyes, and then sealed to complete the protective coating.
Aluminum Processing Tips
1. If the workpiece overheats during machining, the high coefficient of thermal expansion of aluminum can affect tolerances, especially for thin parts. To prevent any negative effects, heat concentration can be avoided by creating tool paths that are not concentrated in one area for too long. This method dissipates heat, and toolpaths can be viewed and modified in the CAM software that generates the CNC machining program.
2. The softness of some aluminum alloys can promote deformation during processing if the force is too high. Therefore, specific grades of aluminum are machined at the recommended feeds and speeds to generate the proper forces during machining. Another rule of thumb to prevent deformation is to keep the part thickness greater than 0.020 inches in all areas.
3. Another effect of aluminum's ductility is that it can create a combined edge of material on the tool. This masks the sharp cutting surface of the tool, dulls the tool, and reduces its cutting efficiency. This build-up edge also creates a poor surface finish on the part. To avoid accumulating built-up edges, experiment with the tool material; try carbide inserts instead of HSS (high speed steel) or vice versa, and adjust the cutting speed. You can also try adjusting the amount and type of cutting fluid.
